and speaking of cycling

As expected, Floyd Landis continues to protest his innocence. No definitive word yet on his B sample, but further information has become available on his A sample, and it doesn’t look good.
In light of this, it’s hard to believe his B sample could possibly exonerate him, and it will probably just be a matter of days before he’ll become the first Tour de France winner forcibly stripped of his title.
Though I’d like nothing better to have this all go away, and to respect this guy, I have to wonder just how stupid Floyd really is – knowing very well that drug tests are regularly done on all of the leaders and a random sampling of other cyclists after each leg of the race, how did he expect to be able to dope himself so heavily, and perform so remarkably as a result, and have it not be revealed in the end? How did he expect to get away with it? It boggles the mind.
UPDATE 07/31 – Well, as Velonews says, we’re unlikely to get resolution on this anytime soon. The next step is the testing of the B sample, which I guess I had expected was already in progress, but apparently Landis has just today formally requested that the sample be tested and it’ll take a few days yet for that to be done. Though Landis still hopes to prove that the elevated testosterone ratio was a natural event, it’s difficult to imagine how he might explain away the confirmed test results that indicate that his testosterone was not only elevated but also synthetic.
