ipod hacking

I am dying to try iPod linux... unfortunately they’re still working the bugs out of the 4G iPod builds, so my iPod photo will have to wait a bit before I introduce it to Tux.
In the meantime I guess I will settle with hacking the firmware which looks pretty straightforward. It’ll mean wiping the HD though, and I just finished cleaning up and throwing another 10 Gb of MP3s on there, so this’ll wait until the next time I have to reimage it.
Also I finally got around to trying the iPod eBook hack that’s been floating around the net for a while now… it definitely works, but it’s more novel (no pun intended) than practical. I had a text copy of Snow Crash sitting around so I converted that, and it was fun for a while, but a) to fit within the iPod note restraints, it had to break it up into more than 200 notes, and b) once you’re, say, 50 or 100 notes in, since there’s no apparent way to exit the note subsystem directly, I ended up having to back out through all the preceding notes. (Imagine not being able to close a book without actually paging back through each page until you get to the front cover.) Ouch. I’ll leave books on the Palm for a while yet, I think.
